WHAT IS BBIP?
  • The Beyond Barnard Internship Program provides funding ($4,500) and supportive programming for Barnard students across all fields of interests and career areas.
  • Students are expected to complete 350 total hours at their internship (typically 35 hours per week over ten weeks)
  • Students who are accepted into the program will have the ability to access subsidized summer housing. Recipients will be asked to apply for housing by the Residential Life and Housing deadline for Summer 2022.
  • Internships can be at for- or non-profit organizations
  • International students are eligible, and should consult with International Student Services to discuss necessary steps regarding Curricular Practical Training (CPT).
  • The program is meant not only to facilitate internships financially, but also to provide a supportive program and event infrastructure for students to develop skills and relationships with other students, alumnae, employers, and more.
  • All internship grants are funded through the generosity of alumnae donors and philanthropic institutions.
BBIP ELIGIBILITY:
  • In summer, BBIP is open to  first years, sophomores and juniors who are currently enrolled at the College and in good academic standing are eligible. Alumnae and seniors graduating in Spring 2022 are not eligible. Visiting (VISP) students are not eligible to apply.
  • It is *NOT REQUIRED* that applicants secure an internship prior to applying. Applicants must secure an eligible internship within 10 days after notification of selection.
  • Remote and in-person internships are eligible. Prior grantees are eligible to apply for funding. Priority will be given to students who have not previously been awarded funding through BBIP.
  • International students are eligible to apply and must attain a U.S. SSN number by the start of the internship in order to be paid. Again, they should consult with International Student Services to discuss necessary steps regarding Curricular Practical Training (CPT).
  • Funding is NOT available for internships with political campaigns or with organizations whose work involves religious proselytizing. No exceptions can be made.
  • Internship funding is NOT available for scientific research at Barnard College or Columbia University. In only exceptional cases will students be funded for administrative positions at Barnard or Columbia.
  • Students are not allowed to use funding for an internship for which they are PAYING an organization to participate in an internship program.
  • Students are not allowed to use funding for tuition, or to cover fees associated with securing an internship. Similarly, students are not allowed to use funding to cover costs associated with completing work for a student-run organization at Columbia or Barnard.
  • Students may only submit ONE APPLICATION per grant cycle (Fall/Spring/Summer)
  • It is IMPERATIVE that you disclose on your application all information pertaining to whether or not you will be paid by your internship and the amount (this includes “in-kind” compensation such as MetroCards, meals, etc.) Any false information on the application may result in recovery of the full grant amount.
ADDITIONAL BBIP POLICIES:
  • Interns must secure an unpaid or low-pay internship for 350 total hours.
  • BBIP participants are responsible for the following:

  • Beyond Barnard reserves the right to amend policies to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the Internship Program.
