Clinical Research Assistant
The Clinical Research Assistant will be working at the Scleroderma, Vasculitis & Myositis Center within the Rheumatology Division of the Hospital for Special Surgery. He/she will be working on studies related to scleroderma, vasculitis and myositis, which are all autoimmune diseases. He/she will be responsible for one or more registries; which will involve identifying eligible patients, administering enrollment questionnaires, gathering a complete medical history, processing blood samples and entering data into an electronic database. The Clinical Research Assistant will also play a very instrumental role in the progress of clinical trials assessing the safety and efficacy of investigational therapies in the treatment of these diseases. The Clinical Research Assistant will aid in identifying eligible patients for such trials, coordinating patient visits, and acting as a liason between patients and physicians. He/She will be responsible for devising workable strategies to boost enrollment for clinical trials and observational studies, which includes finding and/or developing innovative and effective advertisement tools. He/She should expect to assist with the writing of study protocols and grant applications to funding agencies, including the National Institute of Health, industry and foundations. The Clinical Research Assistant will interact directly with nurses and physicians on a day to day basis to monitor the patients’ treatment. He/She will be expected to process blood samples in the lab, which involves basic laboratory tasks such as centrifuging, pipetting and aliquoting. Lastly, He/She will also have the opportunity to assist with the development of patient education and outreach programs.
The position also requires training in Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols, HIPAA and human subject research. He/she will also be encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities offered at this academic medicine institution by participating in clinical case conferences and attending weekly seminars. The experience to be gained from this "hands-on" program is valuable for anyone pursuing a career in medicine.
Job Qualifications:
At least a Bachelor's Degree required. The candidate must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as the position requires a great deal of interaction with patients, researchers, physicians, and clinical staff. He/she will be expected to perform both independently and as part of a team. Strong organizational skills, writing skills and attention to detail are essential for data collection and entry.
